When I read this tweet from Hunter (www.hunteryoga.com) a month ago, it struck me, and has stuck with me ever since. Bringing these words to my conscious awareness whenever I’m wondering how I “will get it all done” has helped me to re-center, to remember that everything happens one small event at a time, that with patience and discipline everything will come together.
I am in a big life transition right now- moving from baby land into a realm where I can actually have time to myself and concentrate on music projects. I am moving from an insular focus-on-family modus operandi to a spiritual place where I am reaching out and making connections. And I feel like in reaching out, everything is pouring in…
…and it is pouring in in torrents! I have so many creative projects coming together right now, I have often felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the incoming rush – two music albums in the works concurrently (one nearing completion, in the engineering phases, and one in the composing/brainstorming phases), playing out again (it’s been years since my Upcoming Events page on my website had so many gigs and concerts), studying to further my technique (weekly lessons with my mentor), teaching again (only one student, but still, more time from the week)- not to mention nuts and bolts of continuing to run my record label.
…and of course there are two beautiful children who I love spending time with (and a 2 year old who certainly tries my patience as she wants to exhort her independence in every minute step of the day). And dinners to be made and mountains of chores that never go away… and um, do I exercise in there? what about sleep?
Just writing that list is enough to make my heart flutter a bit in the OVERWHELMED state, the me that just wants to curl up in a ball and take a nap because how on earth will it ever all get done, so might as well not even start, right?
Well, okay, time to breathe and repeat:
Today I let go of overwhelm. I do what I can.
- I do one task at a time.
- I relish the sunshine and my children’s laughter.
- I bask in the times I sit at the piano to practice.
- I set up schedules and habits that help keep tasks on track.
- I ask for help.
- I rest.
- I let go of expectations- it is what it is. I do what I can.
How do you get it all done?
(and thanks, Hunter!)
